“Unseen Boundaries” explores the complex interplay between cultural identity, masculinity, and queer desire. This striking collection, comprising works from 2007 to 2024, invites viewers into a dynamic conversation between tradition and modernity, as Musk Ming challenges societal norms through his powerful visual language.

Musk Ming’s art delves into themes of transformation, power, and the complexities of masculinity within both historical and contemporary contexts. His works, ranging from watercolor and ink on paper to digital collage and acrylic on canvas, offer a rich tapestry of exploration and self-examination.

In his first USA solo exhibition Ming features notable works such as "Five-starred Rainbow Flag" and "Counter-revolutionary Sodomite", digital self-portraits that confront the intersection of political identity and queer resistance. In these, Ming reinterprets traditional Chinese symbols through a queer lens, subverting the idea of conformity and embracing a more fluid and nuanced understanding of identity.

The "Triptych 'Observe the Propriety'" is a bold statement on the silence often imposed upon marginalized voices, with each panel demanding viewers to question societal boundaries: “Don’t Look”, “Don’t Listen”, and “Don’t Speak”. Ming’s delicate yet powerful ink work reflects the tension between self-expression and societal suppression.

The "Dynasty Series" pieces—Song, Tang, Qin, and Qing—examine the rich history of China, juxtaposing classical imagery with queer narratives to challenge the boundaries of tradition and authority. His "M. Butterfly – Beijing 1964" captures the delicate balance between performance and reality, reflecting both historical and personal layers of transformation.

In his 2022 piece "Seafood", ink on paper evokes a rich connection to sensuality and personal reflection, while "Peak Experience" from 2020 invites the viewer into a journey of the body and mind, exploring the peaks and valleys of human experience and identity.

Musk Ming’s works act as powerful catalysts for reflection on the intersection of queer identities, political histories, and personal transformation. "Unseen Boundaries" offers a dialogue on the visibility and invisibility of marginalized voices, asking viewers to reflect on what is often left unspoken.

On view through June 29.
